Concrete Grinding & Surface Preparation in Antioch CA - a slab your coating can grip

Coating peeling, or a new floor going on? We grind or blast your slab down to sound concrete so the finish has something to hold.

Does my concrete need grinding before it gets coated?

Concrete grinding and surface preparation in Antioch takes the weak, dirty top skin off your slab and leaves sound concrete with enough texture for a new coating to grab onto. It's the step that decides whether an epoxy or garage floor holds, so we do it before any coating goes down.

Most people call us because an old coating is lifting, a garage floor is stained and dusty, or they're planning epoxy floor coatings and want them done right the first time. A slab can look solid and still carry a thin weak skin or a curing compound on top, and a coating can't bond through either one. The price mostly moves with the size of the floor, what's on it now, like old coating, tile or glue, and which surface your coating needs. The schedule turns on how recently the slab was poured and what the moisture test shows, and your written estimate gives you the figure for your floor. If your job needs a building permit, the city's Building Services Division issues it, and I'll tell you at the estimate and settle who gets it before we start.

How our concrete grinding and surface prep works

I start by asking what coating is going on, because that decides how we prepare the floor, and we pick grinding or shot blasting to match it rather than by habit. We test the slab for moisture early, so if it needs an extra step we know before the schedule is set instead of finding out after the coating fails. We also look for old coatings, tile and mastic and plan around them before the grinder comes out. Then our crew works the whole floor, edges and corners included, down to sound concrete, and we clean up so you're left with a bare surface ready for its coating.

Prep is often where other work starts. A freshly ground floor can go straight to concrete sealing if you want plain concrete that's easier to keep clean, and a slab with wide cracks, flaking or low spots may need concrete resurfacing and overlays before anything goes on top. I'll tell you which one your floor calls for once I've seen it.

Why Antioch homeowners call Sterling Antioch Concrete Coatings for slab prep

  • I check your slab myself

I come out to look at the floor and write the estimate, and I run the job with our crew once it starts. The person who saw the problem is the one making sure it gets handled.

  • In business since 2013

I learned floor coatings from an installer here in East Contra Costa and started this business in Antioch in 2013. I judge our work by how the floor holds up long after we leave, not by how it looks on the last day.

  • Licensed and insured in California

We're licensed and insured, and the state licensing board requires a license for anyone contracting for work of $1,000 or more in combined labor and materials. Ask any crew you're comparing for theirs before they start grinding.

  • Based in Antioch, working nearby

We're based in Antioch and work in the cities around it, including Pittsburg, Oakley, Brentwood and Concord. If your city isn't on our list, call and ask.

On this job, what counts is the part you won't see once the coating is down. Call (925) 503-1069, email team@antiochepoxyflooringandconcretepolishing.com or send us a message with where the floor is, roughly how old it is and the coating you have in mind.

We reply to every call and message within one business day. Then I come out, look at the slab, ask how the space gets used and give you a written estimate, free and with no obligation.

What people ask about concrete grinding

Should my concrete floor be ground or shot blasted?

The coating you're putting down should decide it. Coating guides say grinding leaves a smoother surface that suits thin coatings and clean edges, while shot blasting leaves a more open texture for thick, high-build and broadcast systems, and many jobs use both. I'll tell you which your floor needs once we know the coating.

How long does new concrete need to cure before coating?

Most coatings call for concrete that's cured for about 28 days and tested for moisture. If you've just poured, plan the coating for after that window, and we'll test the slab before we grind.

How do I know my slab is dry enough for an epoxy coating in Antioch?

A moisture test tells you, because you can't judge it by looking. Coating guides say the result shows whether the slab is ready or needs a moisture-tolerant primer or a vapor mitigation system, which is a layer that holds back moisture coming up through the concrete, and testing early lets you plan for those steps before the coating goes down. That's why I'd want to test it before we set a date.

What if my older floor in Antioch has tile or black mastic on it?

Mention it when you call, so we can plan for it before anything gets ground. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District covers Contra Costa County, and its asbestos rule covers resilient floor coverings and mastics once they've been ground, sanded or cut. When a renovation removes 100 square feet or more of asbestos, the district must be notified at least 10 business days ahead, and a home with four or fewer units can notify 72 hours ahead for an extra fee.

Is concrete grinding dusty, and how is the silica dust handled?

Grinding and blasting concrete throw off fine silica dust, which is why federal safety rules require crews to control it with vacuum collection built into the equipment or with wet methods, plus respirators where needed. California also has its own construction rule on silica exposure, so ask any crew you're comparing how they meet it, us included.

How much does concrete grinding cost in Antioch, CA?

I give you a written price after seeing the slab, because grinding cost comes down to things I can only judge on site. The size of the floor and how much of it is edges and corners, what has to come off first, whether the coating needs grinding, shot blasting or both, and what the moisture test turns up all move the number. Call (925) 503-1069 and I'll come take a look.

  • Concrete Sealing

If you'd rather keep the look of bare concrete, a sealer over a freshly ground slab helps it shed stains and dust without adding a full coating system.

  • Concrete Resurfacing & Overlays

When grinding shows a slab that's pitted, flaking or uneven, a resurfacing layer or overlay gives you a fresh, sound top to coat instead of tearing the concrete out.
