Polished concrete flooring in Antioch CA - a shine that comes from the grinding

Bare concrete looking dull and worn? We grind it to the sheen you pick and bring out the stone already in your slab.

Polished concrete floor with exposed stone aggregate reflects the wall panels in a large, empty room.

What's involved in polishing a concrete floor?

Polished concrete flooring in Antioch, CA takes the slab you already have and grinds it, pass by pass, to the level of shine you choose, often cutting through the top layer of cement paste to show the sand and stone in the mix.

Most people who call us have a bare slab, an old floor they're pulling up, or a room where they want the look of stone without adding a new surface. We're based in Antioch and work in the cities around it. The price moves with the size of the room, how much stone you want showing, how glossy you want it and what shape the slab is in, since cracks, pinholes or an old coating that needs stripping and removal all add work. The schedule turns on those same things, plus getting the room cleared and you signing off on the sample before we go further. I'll look at the slab, ask how the room gets used and give you a written estimate with your own numbers.

How we do polished concrete flooring

Your slab decides how much stone will show, because the amount and spread of stone near the surface were set when the concrete was mixed, poured and finished. So once we've talked through the look, we polish a small sample on your own floor, and you see the real color and stone before we touch the rest. With the room cleared, we grind the whole floor in passes from coarse to fine, grout where the slab needs it and keep refining until the concrete reaches the sheen you picked. We want the shine to come from the grinding, not from a sealer covering scratches, so I look the floor over before anything goes on top of it, and we clean the room before you move back in.

Polishing works with the color and stone your slab already has, and sometimes that isn't the look you're after. If you want a warmer or more even color, stained concrete flooring puts the color into the concrete itself. If your mix holds too little stone for what you have in mind, terrazzo flooring is a new surface with the chips you choose, ground smooth.

Why Antioch homeowners call Sterling Antioch Concrete Coatings for polished concrete

  • The owner looks at your slab

I come out myself to look at the floor and write your estimate, then I run the job with our crew. That way the person who agreed on the look with you is the one watching the grinder.

  • In business since 2013

We've been working on concrete floors since 2013, and the part I watch closest is the prep and testing nobody sees. Any floor looks good the day it's done, so I judge ours by how it holds up and how clean we leave the room.

  • Licensed, insured, dust kept down

We're licensed and insured. California requires a dust reduction system whenever powered tools grind concrete, and since dust can hang around after the grinding stops, it's fair to ask any crew how they'll keep it down indoors and clean up before your family uses the room.

  • Every change put in writing

California home improvement rules say any change to your contract has to be in writing, legible and easy to understand, and it has to tell you about your right to cancel. If we find something once the grinding starts, like cracks that need more filling than we planned, you'll see it on paper before we do it.

On a polished floor, the shine you see should be the concrete itself, so it starts with a look at your slab. Call (925) 503-1069 or send us your details, and have the room's size in square feet and a few photos of the current floor ready.

Questions before you book concrete polishing

How much does polished concrete flooring cost in Antioch?

Concrete polishing across the US usually costs about $8 to $9 per square foot. That's a national figure, not our price, and your own number moves with how much stone you want showing, how high a shine you pick and how much grouting or old coating removal your slab needs. I'll look at the floor and give you a written estimate.

Can I choose how shiny my polished concrete floor is?

Yes, you choose both the shine and how much stone shows. An industry group for polishing contractors sets out four sheen levels and three classes of stone exposure, so we can agree on the look in plain terms before we start. A higher sheen takes more passes with finer tools, so it's one of the choices that moves the price.

Is a glossy polished concrete floor slippery?

In past lab testing, a glossy polished floor still passed the required slip level by a wide margin, even at very high gloss. Slip resistance in those tests changed with the gloss level, not with how much stone showed. If you're thinking about an entry or a kitchen, tell me at the estimate and we'll talk through the sheen.

Do I need a permit to polish concrete floors in Antioch?

Antioch's list of work that doesn't need a permit doesn't name floor polishing, so I don't assume either way. The city's Building Services Division issues building permits, and its exempt list includes concrete flatwork, noting that most residential flatwork doesn't need one. If your job calls for a permit, I'll tell you at the estimate and we'll settle who gets it before work starts, and if I'm not sure, I check with the city first.

What causes polished concrete to change color?

The sand and stone in your mix cause most of it, because they have a big effect on the final color once the top paste comes off. A floor can look gray at first and turn brown after grinding, and it can shift a lot between a light grind and a deep one. That's why the sample on your own floor matters so much.

How do I know if my slab needs grouting before polishing?

If your floor has lots of pores, fine cracks, pinholes or air pockets, it generally needs grouting, and so does a floor ground to a set level of stone exposure. Grouting fills those tiny surface flaws so the polish comes out more even. I'd want to see your slab in person before saying how much it needs.

  • Stained Concrete Flooring

If your slab's own color isn't what you're after, staining works color into the concrete itself, and it suits rooms where you want a warm, even tone instead of plain gray.

  • Terrazzo Flooring

Terrazzo lets you pick the stone, glass or color in the floor, so it's the route when you want a pattern that no existing slab could give you.
